A Metro Mass Transit bus traveling from Bunkpurugu to Tamale came under armed attack in Nakpanduri in the North East Region early Friday morning, leaving one passenger dead and several others injured.
The deceased has been identified as Robert, a deputy planning officer with the Yunyoo District Assembly. According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. when the bus, carrying 39 passengers, was ambushed by a group of armed men.
Reports indicate that the driver refused to stop despite warnings from the attackers, prompting them to open fire on the vehicle. Robert sustained fatal gunshot wounds, while several passengers were injured during the assault.
Residents believe the early departure of the bus from Bunkpurugu and its late arrival from Tamale may have contributed to the attack, as the vehicle was traveling in the dark hours of the morning. The incident comes just two weeks after a similar attack involving a splinter bus on the same route.
The community remains in shock, with many calling for enhanced security patrols to safeguard travelers along the route. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement, but local residents are urging immediate action to prevent further tragedies.
The death of Robert, described as a dedicated public servant, has left many in mourning — serving as a painful reminder of the growing insecurity faced by commuters in the region.
