Ghana Black Stars were left stunned in N’Djamena on the afternoon of Thursday, 4th September 2025, after conceding a late goal to draw 1-1 with Chad in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture.
Jordan Ayew opened the scoring in the 17th minute, finishing calmly after a brilliant assist from Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Mohammed Kudus. The early goal set the tone for what looked like a comfortable afternoon for Ghana, who dominated the first half. However, the Black Stars failed to capitalize on their momentum, missing several opportunities that could have killed the game before the break.
Chad returned stronger in the second half, staying compact and showing remarkable resilience. Their persistence was rewarded in the 90th minute when Celestin Ecua struck to level the score, sending the home crowd into wild celebrations. The draw not only earned Chad their first point of the qualifiers but also denied Ghana a chance to strengthen their grip on Group I.
Before kickoff, the Black Stars had the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the group to 18 points. Instead, they now sit on 16 points after seven games, still leading the pack but leaving the door open for rivals. Madagascar trail closely with 13 points, while Mali and Comoros are both tied on 12 points after seven matches. With three games left to play, the race for qualification is now wide open.
The result also marked Jordan Ayew’s sixth goal of the qualifiers, highlighting his consistency in front of goal despite the team’s collective shortcomings.
Ghana will quickly turn their focus to their next crucial fixture against Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 8. Coach Otto Addo and the players alike will be under pressure to deliver a strong response and bounce back from what many fans have described as a disappointing performance against Chad.
