A powerful transformer explosion triggered a massive fire at the GRIDCo-NEDCo Sub-station warehouse in Choggu, Tamale, on Monday March 02 2025, causing significant damage to the facility and its contents.
The blaze, which was reported around 02:23 pm, ravaged electrical components, including transformers, high tension cables, and meters. However, the swift and heroic response of firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the fire was contained and eventually extinguished.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with flames engulfing the warehouse and thick smoke billowing into the air. The GNFS team, led by Regional Fire Commander ACFO II Franklin Masiku, sprang into action, deploying firefighters from the Tamale Metro and Tamale Teaching Hospital Fire Stations to battle the blaze.
Despite the intensity of the fire, the firefighters managed to salvage much of the equipment, including transformers, meters, and high tension cables, as well as the warehouse itself. Miraculously, no casualties were reported.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of electrical safety and the need for regular maintenance to prevent such incidents. The Ghana National Fire Service has once again demonstrated its preparedness and expertise in responding to emergencies, and their bravery and quick thinking have prevented what could have been a catastrophic disaster.
